Last Friday I had to go up to a site meeting in Scotland. Over the last 4 years, Matt & I have had many discussions on visiting Scotland but never really got around to doing it. So, we had a chat and decided that my Friday meeting could easily be turned into a weekend trip to see a little bit of the country.
We parted at the airport as I went to my meeting and Matt headed to Glasgow City Centre. We met up for lunch at an Italian restaurant and then grabbed the underground to go to our B&B. They screwed up our reservation and gave us twin beds...but that didn't bother us as we did manage a discount. We had a wander around the neighborhood and found an old bookshop, some music shop, and an antiques place before deciding to go and rest after our 5am start.
The following day we went to the renowned Glasgow School of Arts designed by a Glasgowian architect...their shining star of history! Anyway, we did the tour and then the weather turned a little grey and rainy, so we decided to head to Edinburgh on the train to get there before lunch.
Glasgow was the practical city with shops and pedestrian corridors of wide open walking space. Edinburgh is the tourist city with lots of picture takers, a castle, historical highlights, the works. We made it to our hotel that used to be the bank...appropriately named Bank Hotel. Anyway, each room is based off a Scottish character in history...and it was probably the nicest places we have stayed so far in all our travels. Anyway, we walked and walked and saw the city from above one of the many hills and took tons of pictures. After a full day and a half of Edinburgh we headed to the airport feeling like we made a nice dent in the place...but hopefully to one day return again. Well...we returned about 3 hours later after we found out our flight had been cancelled. Only other option to get back home was to take the train...8 hours long! We were lucky though to be able to buy our tickets though...some were left wondering if they'd be able to get on standby. Anyway, we made it home just in time for me to take a shower, get prettied up, and head out to my Monday morning meeting...oh to be young!
